Quick takeaway

  • Net weight alone does not tell you the tin size. Almonds, cashews, walnuts and pecans fill a tin differently at the same weight.
  • Measure your final blend at its target weight, then choose a tin whose usable internal volume covers that filled volume.
  • Decide early whether the nuts go in loose, in an inner bag or in separate compartments, because each option changes the space you need.
  • A standard tin lid is not automatically an airtight seal. If crispness matters, plan a sealed inner bag.
  • As of October 12, 2026, custom orders typically start at 3,000–10,000 pcs, and stock tins start at about 100–200 pcs. See our cost, MOQ and lead time guide for how quantity affects the quotation.

Why Does Net Weight Alone Not Decide the Tin Size?

Two nut products with the same net weight can need different tins. Piece size, shape, the share of broken pieces and the way the product settles all change the volume the nuts occupy. A tin sized for 300 g of almonds may not suit 300 g of a mixed blend.

The table below shows what to record before you choose a tin.

Factor Why it changes the space needed What to record
Nut variety Piece size and shape differ between almonds, cashews, walnuts and pecans Variety and cut (whole, halves, pieces)
Whole vs broken pieces Broken pieces pack more densely than whole nuts Share of broken pieces in the blend
Roasted, salted or coated Coatings and seasoning change piece size and surface Final recipe, not the raw nut
Mixed assortment Each variety fills space differently Exact blend ratio
Inner packaging Bags and trays take up their own space Inner pack dimensions when filled

How Do You Measure Your Nut Blend for a Tin?

Start with the final product, not a similar one. Fill a measuring container with the exact blend at the planned net weight, level it the way it will sit in the tin, and record the filled volume and fill height.

Then calculate the usable internal volume of the tin you are considering:

Usable internal volume = internal length × internal width × usable depth below the lid (for a round tin, use π × radius² × usable depth).

Here is the arithmetic for two example tins, shown only to explain the method:

  • A rectangular tin with internal dimensions of 150 × 100 × 50 mm has 750,000 mm³ of usable space, or 750 mL.
  • A round tin with an internal diameter of 100 mm and a usable depth of 60 mm has about 471,000 mm³, or about 471 mL.

Compare the usable volume with your measured filled volume. If the blend fills nearly all of the tin, closing the lid and removing the nuts may be difficult. If it fills only a small part, the tin looks under-filled on the shelf. Always use internal dimensions for this calculation, because external dimensions include the tin walls and overstate the space.

Confirm the result on a physical sample filled with the final blend. Custom samples typically take 5–15 days according to our FAQ, so build the fill test into your schedule. If you change the recipe or ratio later, repeat the test, and record the approved net weight, tin dimensions and filling method so production uses the same specifications.

Should You Pack Nuts Loose, in Inner Bags or in Compartments?

This choice changes the tin size, so make it before you fix any dimensions.

  • Loose nuts: These need the least space and suit a single variety. The nuts touch the tin directly, so confirm the interior coating and food-contact suitability first.
  • Inner bag: A sealed bag adds its own volume and keeps the nuts away from the tin surface. Measure the bag when filled and closed, not the loose nuts. Our guides to custom popcorn tins and custom tea tins explain the same inner-bag logic for other dry foods.
  • Separate bags or compartments: A gift set with several varieties needs room to place and remove each item. A rectangular tin usually organizes this layout more efficiently, as explained in our guide to rectangular tins with lids.

For compartments, we can supply accessories such as foam, EVA, flocking blister trays and PVC/PET sheets, as listed on our FAQ page. Specify the insert early, because it changes the usable depth. For a gift assortment, size the tin around the complete arrangement rather than one component, and make sure the lid closes without pressing on the bags or the insert. For broader gift tin choices, read our gift tin box guide and gift tin box size guide.

What Should You Confirm About Oil, Moisture and Coating?

Nuts contain natural oils, and roasted, salted or seasoned nuts add salt, sugar or flavoring to the contact surface. Oil and moisture can affect how a tin coating performs and how the product keeps in storage, so confirm the interior coating for your specific product before you approve production. Our guide to custom mint tins covers coating questions in more detail.

A standard slip lid or hinged lid is not automatically a hermetic seal. If crispness or shelf life is part of your product promise, use a sealed inner bag and discuss the closure you need before sampling. Do not describe the tin as airtight in your marketing unless the construction and test results support that claim.

Which Food-Contact and Allergen Rules Apply?

Regulatory information reviewed: October 12, 2026.

Nuts go straight into the consumer’s hands, so check food-contact requirements for your destination market before approving the packaging:

  • United States: food-contact articles must meet FDA requirements.
  • European Union: Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and the good manufacturing practice rules in Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006 apply, along with Regulation (EU) 2024/3190 on bisphenol A in food-contact materials.

Our FAQ states that tin interiors are coated with food-grade lacquer and that tinplate products can be produced with food-grade materials. Confirm the material, coating specification and any test documents for your market and your product before production.

Tree nuts and peanuts are recognized allergens in both the US and the EU. The food business selling the product is responsible for the allergen, ingredient and net weight information on the label, and the required wording depends on the destination market. Plan label space on the tin artwork, or on a separate label, before you finalize the design. Mixed assortments that combine peanuts and tree nuts need particular care with declarations.

Which Tin Structure and Lid Suit Nuts?

Keep the structure decision simple and tied to the nuts:

  • A round tin suits a single variety or a simple blend filled into one compartment.
  • A rectangular tin suits several bags, trays or compartments in one gift set.
  • A removable slip lid makes scooping and serving easy. A hinged lid keeps the lid attached to the tin body for repeated opening.

Check the lid fit on the filled sample. Browse current structures in our round tin, rectangular tin and hot sale tin packaging ranges.

How Should You Plan Artwork for Nut Gift Tins?

Plan the artwork around the product and the label. A premium assortment often suits a restrained palette and a simple brand mark, while a retail tin may use stronger color and a clearly named variety on the lid. Keep room for the net weight and the other required information described above.

For file preparation, color and finish choices, read our custom printed tin packaging guide. The candy tin artwork and printing guide also covers template use, text size and sample proofing, which apply equally to nut tins.

What Should You Send Before Requesting a Quote?

You do not need every detail final, but mark what is confirmed and what may still change. For nut tins, these items matter most:

  • Nut varieties, cut and target net weight
  • Single variety or mixed assortment, with the blend ratio
  • Loose, inner bag or compartments, with inner pack dimensions
  • Preferred tin shape, lid structure and any existing dimensions
  • Direct food contact or inner pack, and the destination market
  • Estimated quantity, number of designs and target delivery date
  • Artwork files or design references

Send your project details through our contact page. For schedule planning, the lead times on our FAQ page as of October 12, 2026 are about 7–10 days for stock products and about 25–30 days for custom printed tin boxes, depending on quantity and production schedule. A new mold takes about 20–25 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the MOQ for custom nut gift tins?

As of October 12, 2026, customized products typically start at 3,000–10,000 pcs depending on structure and printing complexity, and stock items start at about 100–200 pcs. The exact figure for your project is confirmed in the quotation.

2. Can the same tin hold almonds and pecans at the same weight?

Not always. Different nuts occupy different volumes at the same net weight. Measure each blend at its target weight and choose the tin for the largest filled volume you plan to sell. If several products must share one tin size, test each one on a sample before approval.

3. Will a nut tin keep nuts crisp?

A standard tin lid is not automatically an airtight seal. If crispness or shelf life matters, pack the nuts in a sealed inner bag and discuss the closure you need before sampling.

4. Can nuts go directly into the tin?

That depends on the tin material, the interior coating and the rules in your destination market. Confirm food-contact suitability for direct contact before approval, or use a food-grade inner pack instead.

5. Can I order samples before production?

Yes. Stock samples are free, and you pay only the freight. Customized samples are charged according to the artwork, with a sample lead time of about 5–15 days, as stated on our FAQ page.
