Custom Toffee Tins: Wrapped vs. Unwrapped Fit, Heat & Inner Tray Guide

By Liyipackaging Packaging Team | Published and updated: October 16, 2026 | Regulatory information reviewed: October 19, 2026

Quick takeaway: A toffee tin has to fit the actual pieces, handle toffee’s sensitivity to heat, oil and moisture, and open and close cleanly. Measure the wrapped or unwrapped toffee, decide whether it needs an inner tray or liner, and test a physical sample before you approve production. Then compare suppliers using the same written specification.

Toffee is a harder product to pack than it looks. It is high in sugar and fat, so it can soften in warm conditions, stick to its wrapper or to neighboring pieces, and take on moisture. A tin that suits a hard, individually wrapped candy may not suit loose butter toffee pieces. This guide covers how to size a custom toffee tin, protect the product inside it, and choose a supplier. If you are still comparing candy tin formats, start with our custom candy tin guide.

How Does the Type of Toffee Affect the Tin You Need?

The form of the toffee decides the inner layout, and the inner layout decides the tin size. Start with the product, then work out the packaging.

Individually Wrapped, Unwrapped or Broken Pieces

  • Individually wrapped toffees are usually twist-wrapped or flow-wrapped. The wrapper adds length and thickness, and twisted ends can catch on tin edges or press against the lid.
  • Unwrapped pieces may stick to each other and to the tin surface, particularly in warm conditions. They usually need an inner tray, liner or separating layer.
  • Broken or shard-style toffee, including pieces with chocolate or nuts, packs irregularly. Net weight alone is a poor guide to tin size, so measure the volume the pieces actually fill.

Worked Example: Sizing a Tin for 24 Wrapped Toffees

The figures below are an illustrative example, not a recommended specification. Use your own measurements.

Suppose each wrapped toffee measures about 30 × 20 × 12 mm. Laid flat in a 4 × 3 grid, one layer holds 12 pieces and occupies roughly 120 × 60 mm. Two layers hold 24 pieces and stand about 24 mm tall. Add working clearance so the pieces can be loaded easily, plus headroom so the lid does not press on the top layer. That gives a starting point of around 125 × 65 × 30 mm internal dimensions, to be verified with a physical sample.

The same 24 pieces could instead be arranged in a single layer in a larger, flatter tin. The right choice depends on how the product should look when the lid opens, so test both arrangements before you commit to a tin size.

How Do You Protect Toffee Inside the Tin?

Heat, Oil and Moisture

Because toffee contains sugar and fat, plan for the conditions it will meet between your facility and the customer. Warm storage or summer transport can soften the pieces. Soft toffee can stick to wrappers, trays and tin walls. Fat can also mark paper liners over time, and moisture can leave the surface tacky.

Practical steps to discuss with your supplier:

  • Keep unwrapped toffee separated from the tin walls and from other pieces with an inner tray, liner or individual wrapper.
  • Check the lid closes firmly enough for your supply chain. A lid that opens in transit exposes the product, and a lid that is hard to remove frustrates the customer.
  • Test the sample under conditions close to your real storage and shipping route, not only at room temperature on a desk.

Food Contact Requirements

If toffee, or its wrapper, touches the tin or its inner coating, confirm the intended use with the supplier before you finalize the specification. Ask which materials and coatings are proposed for your application and request supporting documentation where it is required for your market.

Requirements depend on the destination. In the United States, food-contact materials fall under the FDA’s rules, including those for coatings. In the European Union, food-contact materials are governed by Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004, good manufacturing practice under Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006, and, for bisphenols, Regulation (EU) 2024/3190. Your importer or compliance team should confirm what applies to your product and market. For a fuller explanation of coatings and documentation, see the food-contact section of our custom candy tin guide.

Which Tin Structure and Lid Suit Toffee?

Choose the structure for how the customer will use the tin. A removable lid is a traditional choice for gift tins, while a hinged lid suits repeated opening. Check the usable internal length, width and height, because rolled edges, lid construction and inserts reduce the space available.

Rectangular tins often pack wrapped toffee more efficiently than round ones, since rows of rectangular pieces use the corners. Our rectangular tins with lids guide explains how structure, lid and internal space work together. What Should You Ask a Toffee Tin Supplier?

A reliable supplier should explain how the tin will be developed, sampled, produced and inspected. Ask every shortlisted supplier the same questions so their answers can be compared.

  • Does the proposed tin use an existing structure or require new tooling?
  • Can you provide a physical sample for a fit test with my actual toffee?
  • Which coatings or materials are proposed for my food application, and what documentation can you supply?
  • How will the printed color be checked against my approved reference?
  • What are the sampling, tooling, production and shipping stages, and when does the lead-time clock start?
  • How are dimensions, lid fit and surface defects checked before shipment?

What Should a Toffee Tin RFQ Include?

A complete request for quotation lets suppliers quote against the same requirements. Provide as much of the following as you can:

Information Why it matters Toffee example
Product form Determines the inner layout Wrapped twist pieces, unwrapped blocks or broken shards
Piece dimensions or net weight Sets the internal size Approximate wrapped size of one piece
Packing arrangement Affects length, width and height Two layers of 12 pieces
Inner tray, liner or separator Controls sticking and movement Paper liner under unwrapped toffee
Tin structure and lid Affects cost, tooling and usability Removable or hinged lid
Artwork and finish Determines printing and approval steps Brand colors, matte or gloss finish
Estimated quantity Influences price and tooling First order and expected repeats
Destination market Determines documentation needs United States, European Union or other
Target delivery date Sets the production schedule Launch or seasonal date

If your dimensions are not final, send the product measurements and packing arrangement so the supplier can help assess a suitable structure.

For toffee tins, Liyipackaging’s custom MOQ is generally 3,000–10,000 pcs depending on structure and printing, as of October 16, 2026. For cost drivers, sampling time and how to compare quotations, see our custom tin box cost, MOQ and lead time guide and the FAQ page.

How Do You Test a Toffee Tin Sample Before Mass Production?

Approve a physical sample and a written specification before authorizing bulk production. When the sample arrives:

  1. Fill it with your actual toffee, or a representative sample with the same dimensions and wrapping.
  2. Check the arrangement, headroom, ease of packing and lid closure.
  3. Look for wrappers catching on the tin edges or being compressed by the lid.
  4. If an insert or tray is used, confirm it holds the product without making packing difficult.
  5. Shake and handle the filled tin to see how much the pieces move.
  6. Record the approved sample version and artwork version, and confirm in writing how any later change will be handled.

Before mass production begins, reconfirm the order quantity, specifications, inspection arrangements, shipping packaging, destination and schedule.

FAQ

1. How do I choose the right size for a custom toffee tin?

Measure the wrapped or unwrapped toffee, decide on the layout and number of layers, then add working clearance and lid headroom. Net weight alone is not enough, so confirm the fit with a physical sample.

2. Do toffees need an inner tray or liner?

Unwrapped toffee often benefits from a tray, liner or separator because it can stick to the tin and to other pieces. Individually wrapped toffee is less likely to need one, but still test the fit and lid closure.

3. Is a toffee tin suitable for direct food contact?

It depends on the materials, coating, product and destination market. Tell the supplier whether the toffee touches the tin directly or stays in wrappers, then request the supporting documentation your market requires.

4. What information do I need for a toffee tin quotation?

Provide the toffee form, piece dimensions or weight, packing arrangement, tin structure, quantity, artwork, finish, destination market and target delivery date. Mark any provisional details as provisional.

5. Should I approve a sample before ordering toffee tins in bulk?

Yes, especially for a new custom design. A sample lets you check dimensions, lid fit, internal arrangement, printing and finish with your actual product before you commit to production.
