A custom brownie tin has to do more than look good on a gift shelf. Brownies are soft, dense and often oily, so the tin size, the inner liner and the lid fit all affect whether the product arrives neat and easy to take out.

This guide covers metal tins for packing finished brownies. It does not cover brownie baking pans. It explains how to size a tin from the brownie itself, how to plan the layout, how to handle oil and moisture, and what to check in a sample before you order in bulk. For the wider decision between tin shapes and structures, see our custom tin packaging guide.

Quick takeaway

  • Measure the cooled, cut brownie, not the recipe or the baking pan.
  • Plan the tin around a grid of pieces, including wrapper thickness and a small gap between pieces.
  • Use individual wrappers or baking paper liners for oily brownies instead of relying on the tin surface.
  • Pack only fully cooled brownies.
  • Test the sample with real brownies before approving mass production.

Brownie Tin vs. Baking Pan: Which One Does This Guide Cover?

A brownie baking pan is made for the oven. A brownie tin, as described here, is a packaging container used after the brownies have been baked, cooled and cut.

Custom printed gift tins are generally not designed for baking. Their printing, coatings and construction are chosen for packaging, not oven heat. Unless a manufacturer specifically confirms that a tin is heat-resistant, bake brownies in a proper baking pan and transfer them to the tin once they have cooled.

How Do You Choose a Tin Size for Your Brownies?

Start with the finished product. The tin should be sized around the brownies you actually sell, not around a standard box size.

Measure the Finished Brownie

Measure a cooled, cut brownie. Record:

  • Length and width of each piece
  • Height, including any topping or glaze
  • Whether the piece is wrapped, and the wrapper thickness
  • The number of pieces per tin

Cut size can vary slightly from batch to batch, so measure several pieces and use the largest.

Plan the Grid Layout

Most brownie tins hold pieces in a regular grid. The internal length and width come from the piece size, the wrapper allowance, the gaps between pieces and a small clearance at the edges.

Here is an illustrative example. The figures are assumptions for explanation only, and the final dimensions must be confirmed with a physical sample:

Item Example value
Brownie piece (cut) 50 × 50 mm, about 22 mm high
Wrapped piece about 54 × 54 mm (about 2 mm allowance per side)
Layout 2 rows × 3 columns, 6 pieces, single layer
Gap between pieces about 3 mm
Edge clearance about 4 mm per side
Resulting internal footprint about 119 × 176 mm
Internal height about 30 mm, depending on liner and lid fit

Calculation for the example: 2 × 54 + 3 + 8 = 119 mm and 3 × 54 + 6 + 8 = 176 mm.

A rectangular layout like this usually fits a rectangular tin well. If you want to browse existing structures first, see our rectangular tin cans and square tin cans. If your product is a round or circular cut, our round cookie tins guide explains how circular pieces pack differently.

Single Layer or Multiple Layers?

Brownies are softer than biscuits, so pressure matters. A single layer is the safest arrangement for soft or topped brownies. Multiple layers can work for firmer, individually wrapped pieces, but they need a divider or baking paper between layers, and the height of the tin must allow for it. Check this in the sample by closing the lid and lifting out the bottom layer.

If you sell denser square confectionery, our guide to custom fudge tins covers a different set of layering and fit questions.

How Should You Protect Brownies Inside the Tin?

Oil, moisture and softness are the main concerns. The tin protects the shape of a gift pack, but the liner or wrapper handles the food side.

  • Individual wrappers: Keep each piece clean, limit oil transfer and make removal easy. The wrapper material should be suitable for food use.
  • Baking paper liners: Separate pieces and the layers, and reduce sticking. They work well for unwrapped brownies in a gift assortment.
  • Dividers: Keep different flavors apart and stop pieces sliding, where the tin structure allows an insert.

Pack only brownies that have cooled completely. Warm brownies release moisture, which can condense inside a closed tin and soften the surface of the product.

For high-fat brownies, do not plan for the brownie to touch the tin directly. Wrapping or lining is the safer default, and it also keeps the printed or coated surface clean.

What Food-Contact Checks Does a Brownie Tin Need?

First decide whether the brownies will touch the tin at all. If they stay inside a food-grade wrapper or liner, the tin acts as the outer container. If they touch the tin, the coating and material need to be suitable for direct food contact in your destination market.

Requirements depend on where you sell:

  • United States: Coatings and materials intended for food contact are evaluated under FDA requirements, including 21 CFR 175.300 for resinous and polymeric coatings.
  • European Union: Food contact materials fall under Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and the good manufacturing practice rules in Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006. Regulation (EU) 2024/3190 restricts bisphenols, including BPA, in certain food contact materials.

Ask your supplier which documents are available for your market, and confirm the arrangement for the finished pack as a whole: tin, liner and wrapper together. For a deeper look at materials and coatings, see our food tin container material, coating and food-contact guide.

Which Lid Works Best for a Brownie Gift Tin?

A removable (lift-off) lid suits most gift assortments because the customer can open the tin straight away and the closed pack looks clean on a shelf. A hinged lid suits tins that will be opened repeatedly, for example if customers keep the tin for everyday use.

Whichever you choose, check that the lid closes without pressing on the top of the brownies, especially if they have a glaze or topping. Our guide to rectangular tin lid types compares lift-off, slip and hinged lids in more detail.

How Should You Print and Finish a Brownie Tin?

Brownie packaging often uses rich browns, creams and gold accents, but whatever the palette, the artwork should work on the lid and the side walls of the tin. Keep your logo, product name and any required text away from the edges, and leave space for ingredient, allergen and net weight information, either on the tin or on the inner pack.

Matte and glossy finishes change how colors appear, so judge them on a printed sample, not on screen. File preparation, color control and finishes are covered in our custom printed tin packaging guide. For a project that needs a specific structure or shape, see our custom tin packaging solutions.

How Do You Test a Brownie Tin Sample?

Test the sample with your real product, not with dummy pieces. Check:

  1. External and internal dimensions against your measured brownies
  2. How easily pieces can be placed and removed
  3. Lid fit with wrappers, liners or dividers in place
  4. Whether pieces slide when the closed tin is tilted or shaken gently
  5. Whether oil marks appear on the liner or wrapper after a short rest
  6. Printed colors and finish under normal lighting

Change one thing at a time between sample rounds, such as the internal height or the divider, so you can see what fixed the problem.

What Should You Send When Requesting a Quote?

You do not need a technical drawing. Send:

  • Product: Photos and measured dimensions of the cooled, cut brownie
  • Quantity per tin: Number of pieces and the layout, if you have one in mind
  • Inner packaging: Wrappers, baking paper liners or dividers
  • Structure: Preferred shape and lid style, if decided
  • Artwork: Logo or reference design
  • Order quantity: Estimated volume
  • Market and timing: Destination country and target delivery date

An example brief might look like this:

Item Example requirement
Product Individually wrapped brownie squares
Quantity per tin 12 pieces, single layer
Lid Removable lid
Inner packaging Food-grade individual wrappers
Printing Full-color seasonal artwork
Order quantity 3,000 pcs
Market United States

This is a starting point, not a production specification. The final internal size, clearance and food-contact arrangement are confirmed against your actual brownies and a sample.

As of 2026, custom printed tin projects at Liyipackaging can start from 3,000 pcs, depending on the structure and artwork. You can also check the FAQ for current ordering information. Frequently Asked Questions About Brownie Tins

What size tin do I need for brownies?

The size depends on the cut size of your brownies, the number of pieces, the layout and any wrapper or liner. Measure cooled, cut pieces, add a small allowance for wrapping and gaps, and confirm the result with a sample.

Can I bake brownies directly in a custom tin?

Custom printed packaging tins are generally not made for baking. Bake brownies in a proper baking pan, let them cool completely and then pack them. Only consider baking in a tin if the manufacturer has specifically confirmed it is heat-resistant for that use.

Should brownies touch the tin directly?

For oily or soft brownies, wrapping or lining is the safer approach. If direct contact is planned, the coating and material must be suitable for direct food contact in your destination market.

Do brownies need to be individually wrapped?

Not always. Individual wrappers help with oil, cleanliness and easy removal, and baking paper liners can separate unwrapped pieces. The right choice depends on how soft the brownies are and how the tin will be sold.

Can I print my brand on a brownie tin?

Yes. Logos, product names and full-color artwork can be printed, and matte or glossy finishes are available. See our custom printed tin packaging guide for artwork preparation.
